The Oxidation of Porphyrins with Hydrogen Peroxide in Sulphuric Acid

The oxidation of etioporphyrin I and octaethylporphyrin with H2O2 in H2SO4 was studied. It is found that the main products formed, in yields up to 20%, are ketones (e.g. I) obtained by pinacol rearrangement of the diols (II). The ir, visible, and N.M.R. spectra of the products were obtained and discussed.
