Formylmethylcobalamin (I) was prepared by 4 independent routes: periodate oxidation of 2,3-dihydroxypropylcobalamin, hydrolysis of 1,3-dioxa-2-cyclopentylmethylcobalamin (prepared by 2 methods), and the reaction of ethyl vinyl ether with hydroxocobalamin in 95% EtOH. I was unstable, decomposing to MeCHO and B12b in the presence of either light or H2 O at pH <9.
