Abstract:
The order parameters (S) and conformation of MBBA in the nematic state were investigated by NMR studies of the nondeuterated, d17-, and d16-derivs. The value of S of MBBA is larger than its real value when it is calculated from the doublet separation of nondeuterated molecules. As the temperature increases S decreases until it reaches 0 near 45 o C. The aniline ring appears to be twisted 47 degrees away from the C-C:N-C linkage plane
