Fast, Efficient synthesis of Linear Poly(dipyrromethenes)

The synthesis of three octapyrrolic, and four dodecapyrrolic, oligomers is reported. They are linear poly(dipyrromethene)s and potential ligands as building blocks for supramol. architectures through self-assembly. Octapyrrolic oligomers were prepared in 90-95% yields by condensation of 2 equivalents of a tripyrrolic compound with 1 equivalent of diformyldipyrrolic compdounds. A similar procedure, involving the condensation of 2 equiv of a pentapyrrolic starting material with 1 equivalent of 5-7 or 14, was found to give rise to the corresponding dodecameric systems in 41-56% yields.
