A redox stable, water-soluble Fe-porphyrin was used as a model for ligninase. The reactions of lignin model compounds catalyzed by this biomimetic system were dependent on pH and the solvent used. Model studies showed that veratryl alcohol could mediate the oxidation of a polymeric lignin model compounds under certain conditions but could not mediate the oxidation of small molecule model compounds.
