A discussion on the use of model systems and metalloporphyrins, other than Fe porphyrins, is described to elucidate the mechanism of action of the natural systems. The redox chemistry and oxygen binding of these systems is described, including absorption spectra of the compounds. The mechanism of action of cytochrome P 450 is discussed from available data and the properties of Ru porphyrin-O2 complexes.
